Helmut Raith was born and grew up in Wehr/Baden, Germany. He was the last of the Raith family to immigrate to South West Africa (now Namibia) in 1969.
His father was a butcher, who owned his own butchery, both in Germany and in Windhoek. He decided that Helmut, at the age of 13½, should follow in his footsteps and become a butcher. Helmut worked beside his father in the family butchery from this time on. It was here that he found his passion in the meat industry and went on to study in Germany, completing his MEISTERBRIEF (Master Craftsman’s’ Diploma) in 1977, and further qualifying as a Meat Technologist in 1982.
Helmut moved to Cape Town (South Africa) in 1989 and started his own business (Gardens Centre, Cape Town) together with his wife, Ute, who also originates from a family in the meat and catering business/industry. Together they grew their business.
In October 1999 their business-steeped in tradition, moved into a newly built factory in Tygerberg Business Park, and the shop in the Gardens Centre was sold. Since then it has grown into a well-established family business, focusing on a wide range of assorted German cold meat specialities, supplying selected shops, chain stores and the hospitality industry throughout South Africa and Namibia.
The family tradition continues as one of their daughters is now actively involved in the business since 2014, and their son is also following in the footsteps of his father, as he is studying in Bavaria, Germany to join the business on his return.
